How Kite Festival is Celebrated in India 

India is very much popular for its different kinds of celebrations. Makarsankrati is one of them. Makar Sankrati has cultural and historical significance. Different states of India celebrate it differently. It is a belief that Makar is the day when sun transits into Makar. This is the end of winter and beginning of summer or warmer days. There are so many traditions and rituals of celebrating Makar Sankranti. Here we are going to elaborate very shortly to all state celebration.

Kite Festival in India marks the arrival of winter and also the beginning of winter harvest. Apart from India, many other countries in Asia celebrate kite festivals in different ways. The sky is filled with colourful paper kites and it is a public holiday in India. The festival is celebrated for two days in Gujarat i.e. on 14th and 15th January every year.

Maharashtra

In Maharashtra people exchange good-til laddo (made up of sesame seeds and jiggery). They say take this good ghaya and utter sweet words,. This says forget the past and begin with good words.

Gujarat

The biggest kit celebration happens in Gujarat. It is also named as Uttarayana. People go to terrace fly the kites in the sky. People make loud noices like “kaipo che” when they cut opponent’s kite. Ladies make the chikki of peanuts and gud-til. Also they make “undhiyu” which is a traditional dish of Gujarat.

Andhra Pradesh

In AP there is a five day celebration starts from Makar Sankranti. The day 1 is known as Bhogi Panduga, Day 2 is known as Pedda Panduga, Day 3 is known as Kanuma, Day 4 known as Mukkanuma. There is a different tradition of prayers performed in during these four day celebration.

Punjab

Lohri is the holy celebration takes place before Makar Sankranti. Ladies and gents wear folk dresses and do traditional dance “Bhangra”. They burn their newly grown grains in the burning fire and then dance around it.

Karnataka

Karnataka celebrate maker sankrati with ritual called “Ellu Birodhu”. Woman of Karntaka state make regional dishes made of freshly cut sugar cane, sesame seeds and jiggery and coconut oil. They exchange these dishes with at least ten families to share in happiness.

Kerala

People mostly go to see the flame on the Ponnambalamedu hill. It is a tradition that the Ayappa Swami appears here in the form of celestial lighting.

Bihar and Jharkhand

In Bihar also the kite flying shows happens. They also eat sesame seeds and jiggery balls. They also donate the new harvest to go to get the blessings from God. People make relish special khichdi with papad, ghee and achaar.
