What is Winter Solstice

Solstices are the phenomenon that bring transition of the seasons on our planet. Winter solstice is the time when the Sun is at 90 degree below the horizon at the tropic of Capricorn. This event is also known as solar midnight and the shortest day of the year. The nights are longer and cooler in Northern Hemisphere. On the day of winter solstice or the first day of winter, the Sun is directly above the most southward parallel. The Sun is at its nadir and hence the amount of darkness on the particular hemisphere is greater than the amount of sunlight received.
