All the schools and universities are currently having a long vacation due to the pandemic. However, barring few exceptions, all the academic institutions observe summer vacation. The summer break is often one of the longest break they have. All the private and state owned schools and colleges plan their holidays in advance keeping in view the summer breaks. It is the time when major part of the world witnesses summer solstice 2020.

In India, the summer vacation is observed starting from May to end of the June. In many countries, winter season is also a break before starting of a new semester. From primary to higher institutions and colleges have winter break as well as summer break. In UK, the schools have their holidays in mid july and reopen in September.

In Southern Hemisphere, the summer is witnessed in December. The break is also the longest one as it covers major Christian festivals of New Year and Christmas. Hence, the summer break in Southern Hemisphere countries like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa is in December. It begins in early December and the schools reopen during the first or second week of February. Apart from the winter break, summer break, and autumn break; there are public holidays too.

Major parts of the world have their own public holidays including national holidays. The public holidays are observed by schools, universities, and offices. However, certain industries like tourism remain unaffected. Some of the major public holidays are Independence day, Memorial Day, Labour Day, New Year, Easter, Good Friday, and Christmas.

Tourism industry and travel industry have huge business during vacations. Hence, tourists often plan their vacation trips well in advance. The hotels are booked and the resorts have huge influx of tourists. People flock to famous places like Thailand, Maldives, Mauritius, Singapore, and other countries. Officially, the summer begins on 23rd June 2020 in Northern Hemisphere. In hotter parts, it is known as mid of the summer. It is known as summer solstice 2002.
